The analysis of my new work [friendship] part II

4. Act and character

Actor always is a problem to me. In my story, there always have been many dialogues. It is a challenge to actors. A twelve minutes film, we worked seven hours on shooting. Most time I need to direct actors how to present it, how to say it, how to do it. Fortunately, my three actors did it very well. Jing Zhang, which acts Amy in the story, she has the most actor's lines and she worked very hard. Thanks to her respectable work.

There are characters in this story. Main characters are two girls, Amy and Mary. Tom looks like an outlier in this story. But he helps us to understand these complex emotion between two girls. Obviously, he is indispensable, too.

In my opinion, Mary is a very calculating girls. Though she disliked Amy very much, she still invited her to the dinner, and she never presented her loath. I do not really like these kind of girls. However, these kind of girls can be the leader(class monitor) frequently in our life.

Amy is not a very bad girl. But nobody likes her. Why? Just because she is a very selfish girl. She never really considers to invite others. And she didn't want to join in others' dinner as well because of the gifts. She is a very pitiful girl. In China, we believe poor people must have hated the place.

5. Editing

Edit work is a long time work. Because there are too many video materials need to sort out. It takes me about one week, every day I worked on it for five hours. In the beginning, I want it to be a ten minutes short film. Less than ten minutes are better. But when I edited it, I found it's really hard. If I decline it to be ten minutes, audiences maybe can't understand the story. Therefore, my first draft is a 12.45 minutes work.

And then, I realized there are many repetitive pictures appeared in among of three stories. So I begin to do the second edition work. I declined some unnecessary and repetitive pictures and edited it to be 11.30 minutes. Though it's still more than ten minutes, I consider it's the best edition.

The analysis of my new work [friendship] part I

1. Title

I decided to use "Friendship" to be the title of this story because it's very ironical. Actually, there is no friendship in the story.

Ostensibly, three characters are talking very happy and fair-spoken in the first story. However, in the next two stories, they don't like each other actually. In other words, they are not really friends. They even dislike each other very much.

But they still have dinner together. Mary cooked for Amy. Amy bought gifts for Mary and Tom. Though they hate this night, they looked enjoy dinner very well. According to this fact, I believe could be a very interesting and double-edged remark title.

2. screenplay

The first draft of screenplay created last year. At that time, I wrote a simple story just about dinner. There are not so many emotions in it. And I thought it can be a six minutes short film. I discussed this story with Shupeng Yuan, my classmate. And he thought it's too simple. It will be very boring film if we work on this screenplay. So I laid it down and focus on other works.

In February, when we decided to have a small film festival I remembered this screenplay again. I still believe it is a good story. The problem is too simple. I can improve it, make it more mature. So I started to write it again. And this time, I connected it to my project-character's emotion. I put more emotion plot in the screenplay and it would be ten minutes work.

I wrote the first draft and the second draft in Chinese. Because the characters speak Chinese in the short film. And I translated it in the third draft. In the final draft, I improve some language.

3. cinematography

I'm interested in using fixed lens very much so I used a lot of fixed lens in this work. I think fixed lens could help audiences recognize the scenes and the character. The cameraman is Shupeng Yuan. He is very good at shooting. So I can totally believe him.

On the other hand, when I wrote my shooting script, I used some direct skills. Just like: a. Use car(object) to help transfer the scene. b. Make the picture and sound separated. It's an effective skill to present emotion in the story.

Experimental Film — Friendship

It's a 12 minutes short experiment for explore how to present character's inner world with over-voice. There are three parts in the film. However, these three parts are the same story, every part just try to show different character's different emotion in their heart.

The story is about friend. Two girls look like good friends, but actually they didn't like each other. They talked very happy at dinner time. However, in their mind, there has another voice to speak the truth.

I will analysis this work from several aspects(screenplay, cinematography, character, acting and editing...) at weekend.

By the way, I need to thanks for my classmates Shupeng Yuan, Sherry and Larry. Without their help I cannot finish this filming work.

To tell the truth, AMY is the most

unpopular girl in our class. Nobody

             was like her.

                          TOM

So why did you invite her?

                          MARY

I cannot be so narrow like others.

             I’m the class monitor.

                          TOM

And in the end she is not your

             friends?

                          MARY

No. I don’t like her either. She is

             a really selfish and self-righteous

girl. Anyway, I don’t like her.

                          TOM

You invited her to have dinner with

us, but you don’t like her. Why did

             you do this?

                          MARY

Why do you have so many questions?

TOM stop talking reluctant.
