Analyzing six films(include their scripts) in the MA Phase

In this phase, I will analyze six films and screenplays for my study project. This work would be finished before August. And I will talk about this work in this article.

·Why do I need to do the analysis work in this phase?

My study subject is how the director and script writer use film skills to change the character’s emotion is depicted in the film. In PGC phase, I do some experiments and find out some skills to present character's emotion like details and shoot composition. Then, in the PGD phase, I began to shoot a short film work by myself. Through my filming work, I also study some skills to show the character's emotion. After that, I realized I have already done a lot of experiments, however, I never learn anything from other directors. Actually, good films and screenplays would give me many good ideas. At the beginning of this phase, my tutor Jools also suggest me to do some analysis for several films and learn film skills from other directors and script writers. So I decide to do the analysis work in the MA phase to help me achieve my study project.

·Why I select these six films to analysis?

Firstly, I want to find out how director show character's emotion in different type films. So I choose six different type films. Amour is Romance, The Bucket List is Adventure and Comedy, Citizen Kane is Mystery, Milk is Biography and History, Despicable me is Animation, Goodfellas is Crime and Drama. So these six films(include scripts) I selected are different types.

Secondly, these six films should be good films for the majority of audiences. If the most audiences can identify the character's emotion in the film, the director is succeeding. In IMDB, Amour's rating is 7.8, The Bucket List's rating is 7.4, Citizen Kane's rating is 8.5, Milk's rating is 7.6, Despicable Me's rating is 7.6, Goodfellas's rating is 8.8. All of them surpass 7.0 and two of them surpass 8.0. That means these six films are excellent films in the most audiences' heart. So I decide to analyze them.

·What am I going to do?

1. Find all of six films to watch and their scripts to read.
2. Design some questions and options to help me analyze the films and scripts.
3. Make a chart to compare two of these films.
4. According to the chart, start to analyze the films and scripts.

·How do I intend to achieve the research aim by the hole analysis?

According to the analysis, I believe I can study and understand how other directors to present character's emotion changing in their films. How do they use the film skills in the films. I will find out what kind of events can influence the character's emotion. Through understand the relationships of the main characters, I can explore why the characters would change their emotion here and there.

·What is directing skills in the analysis article?

Directing skills here include: the ways of shooting, lighting, ambient sounds, editing, title, music, color, stage property, etc.
